Cinema Evening: The Slow Business of Going
Cooperation LE STUDIO Film und Bühne & Kunsthalle Wien

Cooperation LE STUDIO Film und Bühne & Kunsthalle Wien

Main film (Austrian Premiere): Athina Rachel Tsangari, The Slow Business of Going (2000), 91 min.

Preceded by Marlies Pöschl’s Aurore (2018), 20 min.

Athina Rachel Tsangari's debut follows the story of a young migrant cyborg named Petra Going. Shot in diverse cities around the world, the film unravels as a patchwork of fiction, theatre, documentary, poetry and experimental cinema. The Greek director’s international breakthrough came with her award-winning second and third feature-films, Attenberg (2010) and Chevalier (2015), but Tsangari’s first feature also deserves due recognition for the skill with which she engages with film logic, language and creative cultural critique. A “professional tourist”, Petra leads a non-stop life of travel to collect the experiences of others, at the expense of memories for herself, thus the trip transforms into reflections on amnesia, displacement, and ideas of belonging and desire that often define the postmodern identity. For Petra, home is “the capacity to keep going on without looking back nostalgically”.

The Slow Business of Going will screen at Studio Molière, preceded by Marlies Pöschl’s Aurore, a film on an intelligent nursing operating system, the production of happiness-redistribution machines, and a meditation on psychedelic dream landscapes.

The evening is a cooperation with LE STUDIO Film und Bühne. Pierre-Emmanuel Finzi and Lise Lendais, who run LE STUDIO, attempt to bring together film, theatre and performance. LE STUDIO launches its first programming season at Studio Molière Wien under the motto “the meat of words, the taste of pictures”, insisting on the sensory and sensual dimension of the collective artistic experience.

Athina Rachel Tsangari studied Literature in Thessaloniki, Performing Arts in New York and Ethnographic Film in Austin. She was founder and artistic director of the Cinematexas International Film Festival, and as a producer she was involved with Yorgos Lanthimos' films Kinetta (2005) and Dogtooth (2009).
