Guests: Michaela Kisling, Nicholas Hoffman & Mhairi McInnes

In The Mystery of the Magic Formula Veronika Eberhart invites the audience to revisit the main site of her film 9 is 1 and 10 is none. (Currently on show at Hysterical Mining).

The wood workshop with three machines (which served as the location for the film) was taken over in 1968 by a young married couple. It was a typical family-owned business, as many others in Austria, that expanded in the post war era until the 1960s, when it began to shrink due to the increasing industrialization of furniture production in the 1990s, until they eventually had to close in 2000s.

The reading involves an interview that was held with the former owners of the place. It revolves around their relation to the production, to the machines and their gender-specific division of labor.

It is framed by a musical performance by Veronika Eberhart and Michaela Kisling. “The Magic Formula” (taken from Goethe’s Faust) is not only part of the speculative themes in Eberharts contribution to the exhibition, but also plays a key role in the performance: “Make seven and eight, ’Tis finished straight; And nine is one, And ten is none.” (In English)

Veronika Eberhart studied Sociology and Gender Studies at the Universities of Vienna and Copenhagen, as well as at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna. She lives and works in Vienna.
