Opening VIENNA BIENNALE FOR CHANGE 2019

BRAVE NEW VIRTUES. Shaping Our Digital World

Brave visions on handling artificial intelligence and new technologies, on shaping innovative (urban) ways of work, on new ways of living...

On the basis of which values can the utopia of an economically and socially just and fair as well as ecologically sustainable future become reality? “With the possibilities of art, design, and architecture, the VIENNA BIENNALE will contribute to shaping a future based on values,” Christoph Thun-Hohenstein, General Director of the MAK and initiator and head of the VIENNA BIENNALE, states. Artists, designers, and architects from all continents will take a stance towards the future we really want. The VIENNA BIENNALE FOR CHANGE: BRAVE NEW VIRTUES. Shaping Our Digital World will focus on brave visions on handling artificial intelligence and new technologies, on shaping innovative (urban) ways of work, on new ways of living (together), and on responsible consumption.

CIRCULAR FLOWS: The Toilet Revolution!

An installation by EOOS / Official Austrian Contribution to the XXII Triennale di Milano 2019

It is one of the most pressing environmental issues of our time: the contamination of our water bodies with nitrogen.

It is one of the most pressing environmental issues of our time: the contamination of our water bodies with nitrogen. The Viennese design studio EOOS has developed the revolutionary prototype of a toilet for urine separation (Urine Trap) which offers a systemic design solution in the battle against the mostly disregarded global nitrogen problem. Commissioned and curated by the MAK, the project presents the Urine Trap in a toilet developed together with LAUFEN embedded into a multimedia installation illustrating the ecological interplay of coastal waters, wastewater systems, and agriculture. The exhibition by EOOS shows how design can contribute to repairing the nitrogen cycle and hence to protecting the ecological boundaries of our planet. The foundation of the project was developed over years in research conducted by “Eawag: The Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology of the ETH Domain” (Switzerland) for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The contribution was awarded the „Ape Nera,“ the Black Bee Award of the Triennale.

In the context of the redesign of the MAK DESIGN LAB

The reinstallation of the MAK DESIGN LAB positions design as a motor of sustainable change. Objects from the MAK Collection are placed into a new context and are positioned at the interface between everyday life, society, digitalization, and climate change based on multi-faceted perspectives.

The designers Katharina Mischer and Thomas Traxler founded their design studio in Vienna in 2009. Using the conflict between craftwork and technology, mischer′traxler studio designs objects, production processes, interactive installations, and more. The design duo always embeds their experimental and conceptual approaches in the given context. Works and projects by the design studio, which has received numerous national and international awards, are regularly shown in international exhibitions and can be found in permanent museum collections, such as at the MAK, the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, and the Art Institute Chicago.

About the exhibition Pattern Recognition

Kunstfabrik Groß Siegharts Gallery and Project Space
Opening: Saturday, 1 June 2019, 7 p.m.
Exhibition: 2 June - 14 July 2019

How is the current debate about gender equality reflected in the choice of artistic techniques, materials, and production methods? The exhibition takes a closer look at patterns as a characteristic of textiles. Beyond their role in the design process, they are also analysed and explored in their psychological aspects, as a behaviour pattern, and in their function as an information carrier.

The pattern itself becomes a material, a signifier that speaks of the situation of female and male artists today. In their recent works exhibited at the Kunstfabrik gallery the artists address challenges related to gender equality, which they are confronted with on both a social and personal level.

Over the course of a semester, students of the University of Applied Arts Vienna (TransArts – Transdisciplinary Art Department) also explored historical and contemporary forms of textile art production. Technology and industry, architecture and language clearly reveal their inherent references to textiles. The exhibition will showcase the students’ new ideas and artistic approaches in this context.

The objective is to generate a reflective impression that also points to future scenarios. With its ambivalent connections to industrial, technological, intimate, traditional, and physical realms, textile craftsmanship offers an ideal context for such a discourse. This is also conveyed through the site of the exhibition: the Kunstfabrik – a former ribbon weaving factory, which is now complemented with a historical textile museum – is a fitting platform for investigations into artistic production processes in terms of gender-specific affinities in the application of technologies.

Technofeminist Technology Transfer

From one’s own (gendered) experience to action

Workshop with Cornelia Sollfrank

The starting point for this workshop is the assumption that we have accumulated an extensive experience-based and implicit knowledge through our daily handling of technology. The workshop draws on consciousness raising as a tried and tested technique of feminist knowledge production. CR has contributed to analysis, action and theory of the feminist movement in many ways and will be taken up in this context to explore the oppressive as well as liberating aspects of technology. The aim of the workshop – in which everyone is an expert – is to reveal the relationship between personal experience and the larger political and economic structures. How do gender aspects come into the approach to technology? How can feminist values be put into practice in an over-determining technological scenario? How can personal struggles become political struggles in the context of an emancipatory use of technology?

Open to all genders! Bring your own device!

Cornelia Sollfrank (PhD) is an artist, researcher and university lecturer, living in Berlin (Germany). The exhibition HYSTERICAL MINING analyses the material worlds we are creating through technology and technology’s role in shaping local and global configurations of power, forms of identity, and ways of living. It draws on radical feminist and ecofeminist theories from the 1970s until now that criticized and revised the nexus tying new technologies and techno-science to patriarchal ideas. Its agenda is both intellectual and political. The works of the artists included in the show go beyond critique to think and enact other kinds of knowledge, skills, and bodily practices regarding the use as well as production of (new) technologies.

Anne Faucheret
Anne Faucheret is an art historian and art critic. She has been a curator at Kunsthalle Wien since 2014, where she has curated among others the group shows The Promise of Total Automation (2016), Work it, feel it! (2017) or Saâdane Afif’s solo show, This Is Ornamental (2018). From 2010 to 2015, she was a curatorial advisor for visual arts at the steirischer herbst festival, Graz, Austria, where she organized exhibitions including Adaptation (2012) and Liquid Assets (2013) and co-curated the 24/7 marathon-camp Truth is concrete (2012). She regularly contributes to art magazines and artist publications.

SPACE AND EXPERIENCE

Architecture for Better Living

Guided Tour through the exhibition

Architecture as design is always an expression of social and cultural structures, codes, and values. The focus of SPACE AND EXPERIENCE is on the question of what constitutes “better living”—in particular regarding materiality, ecology, design of atmospheres, participation, hospitality, design of communities, and perspective—and how architecture matters here. The exhibition is a cooperation with Wienerberger and—on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Wienerberger—will be complemented by a presentation on the cultural-historical significance of Wienerberger. Three expert meetings and a symposium have already taken place in the run-up to the exhibition.

Meeting point: MAK Columned Main Hall

Female Values

VIENNA BIENNALE Talk

Keynote and panel discussion in the context of the MAK FUTURE LAB

Keynote and panel discussion in the context of the MAK FUTURE LAB

Being creative, empathizing, caring, and educating are considered to be key skills for “work of the future.” This, however, is exactly the kind of work that, for a long time, was unpaid and, today, is mostly badly paid—and carried out by women. What can the fact that female work receives comparatively little material but also social recognition be traced back to? Is the patriarchy the driving force behind capitalism or is the exact opposite the case? Can digitalization help us to re-evaluate work and “re-feminize” culture and the economy? How patriarchal is artificial intelligence and how can feminism influence digitalization? Will this increase the value of women?

Keynote: Katharina Mader (feminist economist, WU Wien)

ANGEWANDTE FESTIVAL 2019, the new annual event of the University of Applied Arts Vienna, opens up the institution and negotiates sociopolitical topics, as well as artistic approaches, together with the public. Oskar-Kokoschka-Platz is transformed into a stage hosting various formats that explore this year’s leitmotif “Öffnungen / Openings”. This guiding theme refers to the opening of the institution to the public and aims to shake up deadlocked structures with artistic strategies. In the partly new premises of the university, the departments present their work and augment the exhibition with multidisciplinary contributions. With interventions, installations, open classes, performances, round tables, impulses, concerts/DJ sets, workshops, tours, and screenings, the universtiy invites guests to actively participate in the diverse program.

Primping in Front of the Machine Vision Mirror / Lecture

Today words and images are much more likely to be read or viewed by machines than by human beings, as enormous quantities of data are filtered, correlated, aggregated and sorted by algorithms...

Today words and images are much more likely to be read or viewed by machines than by human beings, as enormous quantities of data are filtered, correlated, aggregated and sorted by algorithms designed for digital archives, search engine portals, social network sites and systems policing intellectual property, national security, public safety, civic propriety, medical normality, economic productivity and gender conformity. The use of these algorithms as a substitute for human interpreters tends to raise many anxieties, particularly among those who worry either about omnipresent surveillance or about a total abdication of oversight possible in the very near future. Biometrics – particularly facial recognition and fingerprint authentication – can dictate conditions of access and participation, and users’ future mobility may also be determined by the trajectories of self-driving vehicles equipped with machine vision technologies.

Critics like Jill Walker Rettberg have noted that the last great technological change in visual culture during the Early Modern period connected the sciences and the humanities closely. Renaissance humanist thinkers considered the philosophical, aesthetic and cultural ramifications of techniques for representing linear perspective and anatomical proportions and optical devices like the camera obscura and the telescope, and they also considered how the "self" was constituted by these technologies. Yet the machine vision revolution has been relatively unexamined in the humanities, even in the digital humanities. This talk considers how we see ourselves in the black box of machine vision and what this means for possible futures as subjects, citizens and feminists.

Elizabeth Losh is an Associate Professor of English and American Studies at William and Mary with a specialization in New Media Ecologies. Before coming to William and Mary, she directed the Culture, Art, and Technology Program at the University of California, San Diego. She is the author of Virtualpolitik: An Electronic History of Government Media-Making in a Time of War, Scandal, Disaster, Miscommunication, and Mistakes (MIT Press, 2009), The War on Learning: Gaining Ground in the Digital University (MIT Press, 2014), and Hashtag (Bloomsbury, 2019). She is the co-author with Jonathan Alexander of Understanding Rhetoric: A Graphic Guide to Writing (Bedford/St. Martin's, 2013; second edition, 2017). She published the edited collection MOOCs and Their Afterlives: Experiments in Scale and Access in Higher Education (University of Chicago, 2017), and she is co-editor of Bodies of Information: Intersectional Feminism and Digital Humanities (Minnesota, 2018). Her current work-in-progress focuses on ubiquitous computing in the White House in the Obama and Trump administrations.

She has also written a number of essays about communities that produce, consume and circulate online video, video games, digital photographs, text postings and programming code. Much of this body of work concerns the legitimation of political institutions through visual evidence, representations of war and violence in global news and discourses about human rights.

Admission EUR 2
Free with exhibition ticket or annual ticket and for Community College members.

The lecture takes place in the framework of the Community College program The Black Box Issues.

Exhibition Tour UNCANNY VALUES: Artificial Intelligence & You

In the exhibition UNCANNY VALUES: Artificial Intelligence & You, the MAK is exploring one of the most important subjects of the coming decades, one that has significant consequences for all areas of our lives: artificial intelligence (AI). In order to understand, help shape, and sensibly implement the potentials of artificial intelligence and the associated technologies, we need a new cultural sensibility, and this exhibition seeks to stimulate that. Installations in various media by 18 international artists and designers spread out in a generous parcours enhanced by examples and scenarios from current applications of AI.

What is artificial intelligence (AI) really? What can it do? How does it work, and above all: what does it look like? In fact, AI has no physical form—and yet it has many: it is in our cars, in our phones, in our freezers. Together we will think about how artificial intelligence manifests itself in our everyday lives and what it might look like in the future.

HYSTERICAL MINING

Curator’s Tour

with Anne Faucheret and Vanessa Joan Müller

Curator’s Tour through the exhibition HYSTERICAL MINING with Anne Faucheret and Vanessa Joan Müller

Anne Faucheret and Vanessa Joan Müller, discuss the role of technology in the formation of local and global configurations of power, forms of identity, and ways of life.

Hysterical Mining

Vanessa Joan Müller
Vanessa Joan Müller is a curator and holds a PhD in art history. Since 2013, she has been Head of Dramaturgy at Kunsthalle Wien. She has curated a number of group exhibitions such as New Ways of Doing Nothing (2014), The Brancusi Effect (2014, with Nicolaus Schafhausen), Function Follows Vision, Vision Follows Reality (2015, with Luca Lo Pinto), Béton (2016, with Nicolaus Schafhausen), More Than Just Words [On the Poetic] (2017, with Luca Lo Pinto) and solo shows by Marcel Odenbach and Florian Hecker (both 2017). Prior to projects realized in Vienna she was director of the Kunstverein for the Rhineland and Westphalia in Düsseldorf (2007-2011), research curator of the project European Kunsthalle in Cologne (2006-2007), and curator at the Frankfurter Kunstverein (2000-2006).

City of Temperaments

Every 15 minutes, a wave of signals travels from one house to the next. Data piles up, waiting to become stories, buildings venture predictions, neighbors exchange strategies and energy—the city speaks.

A project of designers Johanna Pichlbauer and Mia Meusburger in collaboration with Wien 3420 and the MAK

Every 15 minutes, a wave of signals travels from one house to the next. Data piles up, waiting to become stories, buildings venture predictions, neighbors exchange strategies and energy—the city speaks. Using thermal heat pumps, photovoltaics, smart home terminals, and the latest sensor technology, Aspern is a testing ground for the city of the future. What intentions do the buildings follow, and who gets to decide on the parameters that are used for optimization? What is the role of the users? Can a house learn from its inhabitants?

Inspired by Nestroy’s farce The House Of Temperaments, in which four families with different temperaments inhabit an old Viennese house, the stage play City of Temperaments tells the story of four smart buildings and how their different characters create synergies and dependencies as they interact with their inhabitants and negotiate energy distribution.

In the course of the VIENNA BIENNALE 2019 and in collaboration with Wien 3420 aspern Development AG, designers Johanna Pichlbauer and Mia Meusburger created a play that playfully looks for new forms of interaction between citizens and their smart surroundings.

SPACE AND EXPERIENCE

Architecture for Better Living

Curator-Guided Tour with Nicole Stoecklmayr, Architect, Scenes of Architecture, Vienna

Curator-Guided Tour with Nicole Stoecklmayr, Scenes of Architecture, Vienna
In the context of the exhibition SPACE AND EXPERIENCE: Architecture for Better Living

Nicole Stoecklmayr is a Vienna based designer, digital strategist, and cultural scholar who publishes essays and lectures on actual and digital experiences of architectural space at Scenes of Architecture (scenesofarchitecture.com). She graduated from the University of Applied Arts Vienna with a degree in architecture and a PhD in cultural studies. She worked as a researcher and lecturer at the Bauhaus University Weimar as well as at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg where she most recently organized the international symposium Perspective Rules! Architecture, Games, and the Materiality of Computer Simulations.

Exhibition Tour CLIMATE CHANGE! From Mass Consumption to a Sustainable Quality Society

The exhibition project CLIMATE CHANGE! shows the importance of transformation design for a necessary turnaround of climate change. Five design installations of the well-known Viennese design studio EOOS (Martin Bergmann, Gernot Bohmann, and Harald Gruendl) will outline images and stories of a new way of life with which we can contribute to a ceasing of the exploitation of resources, a reduction of harmful emissions, and hence to a deactivation of the time bomb of climate change.

On the Way to a Digital Society

Event series in three parts

20 August 2019: Big Data: Dictatorship of the Data, MAK
13 September 2019: Work 4.0: About the future of work, LENTOS Art Museum Linz
22 October 2019: Artificial Intelligence (AI) … and where are we?, CoSA – Center of Science Activities, Universalmuseum Joanneum, Graz

Brave new world? Do you look towards all technical innovations relaxed andhappily? Or do you look at them with suspicion, and perhaps with worries regarding the future? The digital age raises many questions; Utopia and end-time scenarios are then often not so different from one another.

The museum space becomes a space for discussion: Well-known experts discuss the digital future and the transformation of society with you. A chair is free for your questions, statements, wishes, and hopes. Siegfried Steinlechner from the ORF leads us through the conversations.

Curator-Guided Tour UNCANNY VALUES. Artificial Intelligence & You with Marlies Wirth, Curator, Digital Culture and MAK Design Collection, and Paul Feigelfeld, Media Theorist

In the exhibition UNCANNY VALUES: Artificial Intelligence & You, the MAK is exploring one of the most important subjects of the coming decades, one that has significant consequences for all areas of our lives: artificial intelligence (AI).

Marlies Wirth has been working for the MAK – Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna since 2006. As a curator for Digital Culture, she is involved in the conception of the VIENNA BIENNALE and is head of the MAK Design Collection. She curates exhibitions in the fields of art, design, architecture, and technology, including the group exhibition ARTIFICIAL TEARS as part of the VIENNA BIENNALE 2017.

Simon Denny: Theme parks for extraction

MAK FUTURE LAB / VIENNA BIENNALE Talk

Lecture by the artist Simon Denny, followed by a conversation with the critic Julia Gwendolyn Schneider

Lecture by the artist Simon Denny, followed by a conversation with the critic Julia Gwendolyn Schneider

The event is held in English.
MAK Lecture Hall

In his lecture Theme parks for extraction in the context of the VIENNA BIENNALE FOR CHANGE 2019, New Zealand born artist Simon Denny will discuss his recent project Mine currently on view at the Museum of Old and New Art in Tasmania, Australia. He reflects on contemporary notions of “extraction”—extraction of data harvested through increasingly omnipresent platforms, extraction of labor from people and other beings in different formations of conscious and unconscious “work” and the extraction of resources from the earth and its ecosystems as they are organized to support human activity.

Simon Denny is an artist working with installation, sculpture, print, and video. His research-based art projects explore the interaction and politics of tech business culture, both in governmental and commercial infrastructures. He has made several projects unpacking the culture around crypto currencies, including Blockchain Future States at the 2016 Berlin Biennale. He studied at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and at the Städelschule, Frankfurt am Main. Solo exhibitions of his work have appeared in institutions worldwide, among them the Museum of Old and New Art, Berriedale, Tasmania where his show Mine is on view until April 2020. In 2015, Denny represented New Zealand at the 56th Venice Biennale. He is a Professor for Time Based Media at the HFBK in Hamburg. He lives and works in Berlin.

Julia Gwendolyn Schneider is an art critic, translator, and editor. She studied aesthetics, cultural studies and American studies in Berlin and London. Her texts have appeared in Camera Austria International, springerin, die tageszeitung, Yishu: Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art, and LEAP. She is currently working on art that sheds light on the social and political implications of machine learning and artificial intelligence. She lives and works in Berlin.

Lecture and conversation in context of the MAK FUTURE LAB, financially supported by the EU program Interreg V-A Slovakia–Austria (Project “Design & Innovation”).

YONA FRIEDMAN – Spatial Visions

An exhibition of the Austrian Frederick and Lillian Kiesler Private Foundation

Yona Friedmans Konzepte von Architektur sind eng mit der Dynamik von sozialen Strukturen und der Veränderlichkeit der Bedürfnisse von NutzerInnen verbunden.

Yona Friedman’s concepts of architecture are closely linked to the dynamics of social structures and the variability of the users’ needs. These topics which he has emphasized from the beginning of his work have gained even more importance in present times with the current developments in migration. It is due to his own history as a migrant that his ideas and his engagement for deeply human architecture and society are based on existential experience. Being both radical and future-oriented, Friedman’s “utopies réalisables,” have made a great impact in the context of the architectural avant-garde. The presentation will show a selection of them.

A number of invited artists, as well as some of the artists participating in the exhibition Hysterical Mining, will present their work, research, ideas and inspirations.

Karin Ferrari (b. Meran) uses media from pop and everyday culture to investigate the present. Her artistic research focuses on speculative narratives at the threshold of academic theory, paranoid political imagination and esoteric utopia desires. Her artistic work is often inspired by an Internet subculture that tries to understand “what’s really going on”. For the past two years Karin Ferrari has been travelling on research trips and residencies in the USA, Europe and South East Asia.

Curator-Guided Tour with Katharina Mischer and Thomas Traxler, mischer′traxler studio

CIRCULAR FLOWS: The Toilet Revolution!

An installation by EOOS

It is one of the most pressing environmental issues of our time: the contamination of our water bodies with nitrogen.

It is one of the most pressing environmental issues of our time: the contamination of our water bodies with nitrogen. With the Urine-Trap, the Viennese design studio EOOS has developed the revolutionary prototype of a toilet for urine separation which offers a systemic design solution in the battle against the mostly disregarded global nitrogen problem. In March 2019, the Urine-Trap, developed in cooperation with LAUFEN, was presented at the XXII. Triennale di Milano 2019 Broken Nature: Design Takes on Human Survival, embedded into a multimedia installation (with Process Studio) illustrating the ecological interplay of coastal waters, wastewater systems, and agriculture. The installation by EOOS, now exhibited at the MAK FORUM, shows how a toilet with urine separation can contribute to repairing the precious nitrogen cycle and, consequently, to protecting the ecological boundaries of our planet. The foundation of the project was developed over years in research conducted by Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology of the ETH Domain, for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. EOOS was responsible for the design of the Urine-Trap. As an award-winning design studio working at an international level, for example, with brands such as Adidas, Armani, bulthaup, Walter Knoll, LAUFEN, Herman Miller, or Zumtobel, EOOS has also been dedicated to projects in the fields of social and sustainable design for several years—most recently at the biennale for architecture in Venice in 2016 or at the VIENNA BIENNALE 2017. The contribution to the XXII. Triennale di Milano 2019 was commissioned by the MAK and financed by the Austrian Federal Chancellery.

The Mystery of the Magic Formula

An Evening with Veronika Eberhart and Guests

Guests: Michaela Kisling, Nicholas Hoffman & Mhairi McInnes

Guests: Michaela Kisling, Nicholas Hoffman & Mhairi McInnes

In The Mystery of the Magic Formula Veronika Eberhart invites the audience to revisit the main site of her film 9 is 1 and 10 is none. (Currently on show at Hysterical Mining).

The wood workshop with three machines (which served as the location for the film) was taken over in 1968 by a young married couple. It was a typical family-owned business, as many others in Austria, that expanded in the post war era until the 1960s, when it began to shrink due to the increasing industrialization of furniture production in the 1990s, until they eventually had to close in 2000s.

The reading involves an interview that was held with the former owners of the place. It revolves around their relation to the production, to the machines and their gender-specific division of labor.

It is framed by a musical performance by Veronika Eberhart and Michaela Kisling. “The Magic Formula” (taken from Goethe’s Faust) is not only part of the speculative themes in Eberharts contribution to the exhibition, but also plays a key role in the performance: “Make seven and eight, ’Tis finished straight; And nine is one, And ten is none.” (In English)

Veronika Eberhart studied Sociology and Gender Studies at the Universities of Vienna and Copenhagen, as well as at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna. She lives and works in Vienna.

Choreographer, dancer and performer Anne Juren presents a Fantasmical Anatomy Session in the Karlsplatz exhibition space, in response to the environment, diverse works and ideas drawn from the Hysterical Mining exhibition. Seeking to expand the concept of choreography in her work, Juren’s distinctive practice challenges boundaries between public and private, between outer and inner space, by trespassing normative boundaries and experimenting with kinaesthesia and sensuality. Fantasmical Anatomy Session creates a visual, sound and sensory landscape, and proposes a delirious journey around and inside bodies, where dysfunctional relations and unimaginable actions can take place. (In English)

Anne Juren founded the Wiener Tanz- und Kunstbewegung association (with visual artist Roland Raagas) in 2003, she has been a Feldenkrais® practitioner since 2013, and is a member of the Artistic Committee of the Master in Choreography programme at DOCH (Stockholm).

Collective Moon Gazing with Tabita Rezaire

Artist, digital activist and spiritual healer Tabita Rezaire leads a collective sky-gazing during the full moon. This participatory performance is viewed as an offering; bringing people together to watch the stars and moon, to realign and harmonize the energies of their mind-body-spirits. As an agent of healing, Rezaire’s artistic practice is closely connected to the health of the soul and heart consciousness. The collective celestial action portrays her interests in astronomy, astrophysics, and spiritual sciences – prominent elements in her work on display at Karlsplatz, The Song of the Spheres (2018).

Meeting point: MAK Columned Main Hall
Admission € 5 (Tuesdays 6–10 p.m.) plus attendance fee of € 3.50

Artist Barbara Kapusta’s sculptural installation The Giant (2018), composed of ceramic objects and speech bubbles of text, is on show at both Kunsthalle Wien Museumsquartier and Karlsplatz locations of the Hysterical Mining exhibition. Kapusta contributes to the Hysterical Mining program with a spoken word performance. She will read a selection of her own writing – The Giant (2018) as well as excerpts specially selected from her forthcoming book, Dangerous Bodies (2019) that brings together a number of significant texts and poems by the artist such as: Empathic Creatures and We Make the Place by Playing. Kapusta frequently approaches the figure, form, physicality and materiality of the body in her practice, pointing to the communication and relations between her protagonists, while significantly often simultaneously addressing language. (In English)

Barbara Kapusta lives and works in Vienna, her practice is the conjunction of the body with materiality and speech. Materiality becomes entrusted with a queer agency that allows for diversity and vulnerability.

Cinema Evening: The Slow Business of Going

Cooperation LE STUDIO Film und Bühne & Kunsthalle Wien

Location: Studio Molière, Liechtensteinstraße 37, 1090 Wien

Cooperation LE STUDIO Film und Bühne & Kunsthalle Wien

Main film (Austrian Premiere): Athina Rachel Tsangari, The Slow Business of Going (2000), 91 min.

Preceded by Marlies Pöschl’s Aurore (2018), 20 min.

Athina Rachel Tsangari's debut follows the story of a young migrant cyborg named Petra Going. Shot in diverse cities around the world, the film unravels as a patchwork of fiction, theatre, documentary, poetry and experimental cinema. The Greek director’s international breakthrough came with her award-winning second and third feature-films, Attenberg (2010) and Chevalier (2015), but Tsangari’s first feature also deserves due recognition for the skill with which she engages with film logic, language and creative cultural critique. A “professional tourist”, Petra leads a non-stop life of travel to collect the experiences of others, at the expense of memories for herself, thus the trip transforms into reflections on amnesia, displacement, and ideas of belonging and desire that often define the postmodern identity. For Petra, home is “the capacity to keep going on without looking back nostalgically”.

The Slow Business of Going will screen at Studio Molière, preceded by Marlies Pöschl’s Aurore, a film on an intelligent nursing operating system, the production of happiness-redistribution machines, and a meditation on psychedelic dream landscapes.

The evening is a cooperation with LE STUDIO Film und Bühne. Pierre-Emmanuel Finzi and Lise Lendais, who run LE STUDIO, attempt to bring together film, theatre and performance. LE STUDIO launches its first programming season at Studio Molière Wien under the motto “the meat of words, the taste of pictures”, insisting on the sensory and sensual dimension of the collective artistic experience.

Athina Rachel Tsangari studied Literature in Thessaloniki, Performing Arts in New York and Ethnographic Film in Austin. She was founder and artistic director of the Cinematexas International Film Festival, and as a producer she was involved with Yorgos Lanthimos' films Kinetta (2005) and Dogtooth (2009).

Marlies Pöschl is an artist and filmmaker, based in Vienna and Paris. Having graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and the University for Applied Arts, Vienna, she currently teaches at the department of art and digital media at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna. Her projects have been presented in numerous international festivals and exhibitions. She is a founding member and chairperson of The Golden Pixel Cooperative – a plattform for art and moving image.

Can books be thought of as black boxes? Let’s browse the Hysterical Mining Library to (re)discover our connection with books, the way we look at them and how they address us. For empowering strategies of interaction and knowledge circulation in the digital realm, what can we learn from the often intimate emotions, the curiosities, anxieties, and attractions that books evoke in us – by both content and cover?

The workshop takes place in the framework of the Community College Black Box Issues project week.

SPACE AND EXPERIENCE

Architecture for Better Living

Curator-Guided Tour with Nicole Stoecklmayr, Architect, Scenes of Architecture, Vienna

Curator-Guided Tour with Nicole Stoeckelmayr, Scenes of Architecture, Vienna
In the context of the exhibition SPACE AND EXPERIENCE: Architecture for Better Living

Meeting point: MAK Columned Main Hall
Admission € 5 (Tuesdays 6–10 p.m.) plus attendance fee of € 3.50

“Feminism loves another science: the sciences and politics of interpretation, translation, stuttering, and the partly understood. [...] Translation is always interpretive, critical, and partial. Here is a ground for conversation, rationality, and objectivity – which is powersensitive, not pluralist, ‘conversation’.” (Donna Haraway)

Mag.a Dagmar Fink, literary scholar and cultural theorist, 2019 PhD Thesis on Cyborg-Concepts of Donna Haraway and in SF-Feminisms. Since 2000 she is teaching at various Austrian, German and Swiss universities and works as a translator of theoretical texts in the queer/feminist collective gender et alia. She co-founded and is active in the Association of Feminist Academics (Verband feministischer Wissenschafter/innen) in Austria, and is board member of the ÖGGF Gender Studies Association Austria.

Usually a game would be considered as a setting where all of the rules in place are transparent to all participants. What happens if rules are spontaneously added, deliberately confusing, or misunderstood? Thinking of how games, social conventions or traffic regulations frame behaviour, can the protocols that are imposed on us by technological or smart devices be considered to similarly shape and norm subjectivities?

Artist Katrin Hornek will give a lecture-performance playfully drawing on much of her artistic research and collaboration relating to the environmental, political and societal impact of CO2 emissions. Casting Haze (2018-2030) is the title of her multimedia installation presented at Karlsplatz. The installation is representative of her long term project with scientists based on CO2 mineralization technologies, examining their geographies, economies, industrial entanglement and philosophical grounding. Hornek will elaborate on her plans to realise a fourteen kilogram sculpture/prize from air or water-based mineralization technologies called Atmosphere– The Decarbonization Trophy. Aspects of Hornek’s practice – which addresses the processes of capitalism and extractivism – will surface in her lecture, bringing to light the physical problems of the material world. (In German)

Katrin Hornek studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and the Royal Danish Academy, she teaches at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, and is part of the interdisciplinary research project The Anthropocene Surge (WWTF). In 2017, Hornek was awarded a scholarship for visual arts by the Austrian Ministry of Culture.

The interrelations between textile crafts, technology and gender are dealt with from material and tool perspectives in Handcrafting the Digital whereby stereotypical attributions will be deconstructed collectively. First, Irene Posch will give an overview of the historical interfaces and intersections between craftwork techniques (often connoted with femininity) and the fields of computing and electronics (often connoted with masculinity) by using concrete examples. The practical part of the workshop will explore and show how concrete examples can become active at the interface of textiles, electronics and computer technology.

Irene Posch is a professor at the University of Art and Design in Linz. Her scientific and artistic work addresses the mutual integration of new technologies, arts and crafts and their cultural, technical and aesthetic implications. www.ireneposch.net

Furthermore, they will explore the use of emancipatory narratives as a tool of political action from the margins and delve into the transformative potentials of collective dreaming of our past(s) and possible futures. (In English)

Curator-Guided Tour with Katharina Mischer and Thomas Traxler, mischer′traxler studio

Workshop with Stefanie Wuschitz

Anti-racist Robot Workshop

Just think of Audre Lorde, Reni Eddo-lodge, or Joy Buolamwini, who have made us aware of structural discrimination and the historical causes of racism in order to recognize our own prejudices.

Just think of Audre Lorde, Reni Eddo-lodge, or Joy Buolamwini, who have made us aware of structural discrimination and the historical causes of racism in order to recognize our own prejudices. When we teach machines to think, they copy and mirror our mindsets. In this process of replication, not only knowledge is passed on and extended, but also our prejudices and misconceptions. Let’s build anti-racist robots! Building robots provides us with the opportunity to playfully deal with and discuss our own biases, blind spots, and stereotypes. Let’s make feminist technology that acts less racist than ourselves. Bring your laptop, Arduino, sensors, speakers or electronics garbage and enjoy a feminist mini hackathon with us.

Stefanie Wuschitz works at the intersection of art, research and technology, with a particular focus on feminism, open source technology and peer production. She is a co-founder of Mz* Baltazar's Lab – Feminist creative space for hackers and others.
